Thank you very much to Maddy for a great job of Nutty News whilst I was off travelling around Thailand

This weekend sees the second year of The Big Help Out. Its objective is to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their communities. This ties in nicely with the Squirrel's takeover at parkrun this week.

I know many of you have already got your name down to volunteer but if not, it's not too late to contact Tim Windram. We can never have too many volunteers! And don't forget breakfast at Attfield's afterwards

This week

Rothley 10k Tuesday 4th June

Braunstone parkrun Squirrel's takeover Saturday 8th June

Market Harborough Carnival 10k Saturday 8th June

Next week

Rothley 10k Tuesday 4th June

Market Harborough Carnival 10K Saturday 8th June

This and Rothley 10k are both really popular races which are well attended and enjoyed by many Squirrels and supporters are always appreciated (with or without pom poms). If anyone fancies supporting with me, let me know. Although you may be forced to wave a pompom

Welcome to Nutty News. Hope you are all enjoying the bank holiday weekend. I joined several Squirrels at Braunstone ParkRun for our monthly Mental Health Run/Walk. I 'Jeffed' it with the lovely Julie Kilby in support and it got me thinking about the positive things Squirrels and running has brought to my life. This was my Return to Running ParkRun and I was nervous. Julie and I became friends through C25K in 2022 and it is fair to say that we run at very different paces, but have remained firm friends. Julie has cheered me on (and commiserated with a beer or two) through rest, rehab and return to running and so I was happy when she offered to Jeff with me and reassured me we would go at my pace and cross the line together. Which we did, so I encourage you all on those days when running or life feels tough to remember the power of being a Squirrel !

Well, what to say this week? I have given a friend from London a tour of Leicester to show her that it's a lovely place. Yes I know, a huge challenge! But I think I succeeded. Her highlight of the Stevenage area was to show me the UKs first roundabout (even though the sign had been stolen ) but I didn't know then that I could beat that!

"The Clock Tower was built originally as a solution to traffic congestion on the site of the town´s former hay and straw market in 1868. Horse drawn vehicles all converged on the area known as the Haymarket from six streets, causing chaos. It was decided that "The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower" would be built at the meeting place of the five roads to protect pedestrians from horse traffic and make the junction easier to cross on foot.

What they were proposing was, in essence, the first traffic island in England…

In 1903 tramlines were laid around the clock tower. The maze of lines made the junction the most complex in Britain"

Sorry guys this is a very quick and brief Nutty News because it's currently Sunday evening, I'm still in London and in a bar

Absolutely awesome seeing everyone run the marathon in London. Not only our brilliant Squirrels but those in fancy dress, the elite runners and those raising money for causes close to their heart. I can't even begin to list the amazing people we saw. Russ Cook (the hardest geezer), a lady who ran topless after having a double mastectomy, Colin (or Cuthbert?) the caterpillar, the man who was running his 44th London marathon, those pushing wheelchairs and I think 4 people running with a fridge on their back!

It's all very inspiring and great fun supporting and cheering. But honestly it's very tiring and hard work (see pic below) and I need a rest

Celebratory drinks at the White Horse after the run on Wednesday for everyone. If you ran, bring your medal for a free drink.

We are still looking for a new committee member so please get in touch if you are interested. Nutty news would be better this week if I had some help!

Reminder about the track session with Charlie on Monday 29th April

Quiz night on Friday 10th May is definitely going ahead so please pay if you've not already and there are still places if you want to sign up

The ballot is now open for London next year. Also entries are open for the Manchester marathon which also has a relay option for a team of four

On the way back from London Landmarks last week, I had some help with the intro to Nutty News from the lovely Nicky Marlow and Lorraine Keable. After talking about the incredible Russ Cooke, they then moved on to this week to find fun facts about today. This is what they found:

  • April 15th is National "That Sucks Day", an unofficial American holiday that is more of a vindictive dedication to unpleasant events or occurrences.
  • It is unluckier than Friday 13th
  • 1865 President Abraham Lincoln died after being shot the day before
  • 1906 The San Francisco Earthquake
  • 1912 The RMS Titanic sank
  • 1989 The Hillsborough Disaster
  • 2010 The Deepwater Horizon Disaster
  • 2013 The Boston Marathon Bombing
  • 2019 The Notre Dame Cathedral Fire

So happy Monday everyone!

An amazing achievement for Russ Cooke, aka The Hardest Geezer, who yesterday completed his mammoth challenge to run the entire length of Africa! His initial plan was to complete 360 marathons in 240 days with no rest days but due to illness he ended up having 3 rest days. Only THREE As if the run wasn't enough of a challenge, he also had Visa issues and an armed robbery to deal with. He finally finished his challenge yesterday and the Hardest Geezer will finally get his hands on the one thing he has been craving since day one - a strawberry daiquiri

NUTTY NEWS Easter Monday 1st April

Today is April fools day which is designed to be a day you can play practical jokes on friends & family. But did you know it's supposed to be bad luck if you play these tricks after midday so make sure you get in nice & early

I am sure you have all had plenty of Chocolate as well over the weekend but did you know the average woman has to run for 2 hours & a man for 1hr 45 to burn off a single Easter egg.

For those of you not signed up yet we are doing a quiz night on the 10th May at the Conservative Club in the village. Sarah has put a separate post on. We currently only have 18 people signed up so if you are wanting to put that random general knowledge we all have to the test please sign up.

Monday 29th April we are doing a track night at Pingles with Charlie who trains a few of our runners. This is a free session that has been paid for by the club so we have sole access to the track & is open to everyone. Charlie will also be doing a Q&A afterwards. Track session is 6-7

Official shirt order has now been placed & the next one will be in September.

If you are running any of the big events over the next few weeks then a tip from Cirhan is to scour the charity shops for on old hoody you can leave at the start as it's cold while you are waiting in the pens. Any hoodies left are then collected up & donated to charity. Many from the club are running either for the club charity or numerous other ones so we wish them all well.

Saturday 6th April sees Dawn's 100th Park run at Braunstone if anyone would like to join her. This is an amazing achievement considering she suffered a badly broken ankle over a year ago & was out of action for a long time.

25/03/2024

Two noteworthy running achievements this week in the news:

British runner, Jasmin Paris, has made history by becoming the first woman to finish one of the world's hardest ultramarathons. She completed the Barkley Marathons in Tennessee with just one minute 39 seconds to spare of the 60-hour cut off. Absolutely incredible! Only 20 people have ever made it to the end of the race within the allotted 60 hours since it was extended to 100 miles in 1989.

And congratulations to Nicki Clark for becoming the first ever parkrunner to reach the 1,000 volunteer milestone. The t-shirt is yellow

This event is raising money for this years nominated charities Leicestershire Carers Centre and LAMP which is a local Mental Health charity. Tickets £10pp to include a sandwich buffet. 70 places available initially to Squirrels (with the option for non Squirrels if this number is not reached).

To secure your place please pay £10 into the Squirrels bank account with your name and 'Quiz' as reference. Lynne Rowe will monitor this. Lorraine Keable will allocate Squirrels to teams, unless you contact her in confidence with a preference.
Emma Marlow will be running a raffle on the night

Today is Global Recycling Day

"Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not too distant future, it will run out. That's why we must think again about what we throw away – seeing not waste, but opportunity. The last decade has been the hottest on record, and we are now facing a climate emergency of unparalleled proportions. If we don't make significant and rapid changes, we will see continued rising global temperatures, the melting of icecaps, continents on fire and rapid deforestation."

This links in perfectly to the sustainability pilot project that Cirhan Truswell is leading with the aim to encourage running clubs to become more eco conscious and have a positive impact on the environment. If anyone is interested in learning more about the pilot and getting involved, let Cirhan know and she will set up a little group to discuss ideas and come up with the pledges for the club.

Walking Wednesday

We all know how important exercise is for our physical and mental health. However, unfortunately we sometimes get injured or need to give running a rest therefore, I am going to be giving Walking Wednesday a trial. This will be an option on the poll and is just an informal walk around the village. From unfortunate personal experience, I know how devastating it can be to be told not to run (even if this is just for a few weeks) and so let's look after each other and have a walk and a natter and keep our minds and body active. It will be starting this Wednesday so please feel free to join us * Due to my injury, if it's icy I will not be walking.

Track sessions

We are now offering a monthly track session which will fall on the same night as intervals. We will still offer intervals in Broughton for anyone that can't attend, although I would really encourage people to come to the track sessions though as I think you will get so much out of them and they are a lot of fun (no really ). I know a lot of us probably haven't run on a track since school (or ever!)We will run at Pingles Stadium in Nuneaton (about 20 mins from Broughton) and alternate between Mondays and Wednesdays each month which gives everyone the opportunity to be able to attend.

Don't be intimidated by the track sessions - we usually have it to ourselves, there is no traffic and it is quite different to running on the road. As with intervals, track sessions will be suitable for ALL abilities.

If you aren't sure, I'd encourage you to have a chat with some of our runners who have been taking part in the 10k improvers on how they have found the sessions, or of course message Tim with any questions.

The cost of the track is £3 per session and if you want to come along you will need to book and pay yourself - you can do this now for our first club session, which will be on **Wednesday 13th March at 7pm**Please see original post for the link to book or speak to Tim Windram

Where did February go?!! Welcome March Random facts about March… it is the equivalent of September in the Southern Hemisphere. Every year, March and June finish on the same day of the week. It was our first mental health parkrun on Saturday at Abbey Park and was a success thank you Nicky Marlow for arranging this!

It was nice to see so many Squirrels' join us especially as being the first one, many couldn't make it due to prior commitments, but it will be a regular feature on the last Saturday of every month in different locations around Leicestershire.

The aim is to get together and talk and have that one week each month to stop afterwards and have coffee and a natter rather than rushing off. We would also like to encourage car sharing not only for the environmental benefits, but again to get people talking.

It is important to know that parkrun is for everyone, no matter your ability. On Saturday, for various reasons, there were a few of us who walked and we had a lovely natter on the way round talking about trees and the spikes on holly leaves One person completed half of the parkrun and that's ok too. And if you can't walk one lap, then volunteer. I can say from personal experience how much parkrun has helped me even when I was on my knee scooter or bringing a chair because I couldn't stand for long. Volunteering got me out in the fresh air, talking to new people and smiling watching the different people of all ages, backgrounds, ability and sizes complete their own personal goals.

So no matter if you run a 20 minute 5k, walk a 60 minute 5k, walk/run 2.5k or volunteer, everyone is welcome

I really enjoyed cheering on our runners in the Naesby 1645 race yesterday with Nicky Marlow. However, despite walking up a massive hill to get to a good spot, walking through many big puddles and standing in the pouring rain, the one who got the most attention and fuss and Nicky's little Myffy who was in a bag, wrapped in a blanket and keeping nice and dry! It was surprising how many runners stopped to give her some fuss but they must have all been too tired at the end because she wasn't given any attention then at all

A tough course and horrible weather and you all did amazing, well done

Mental health parkrun/ walk

As Squirrel members, we all know and experience the advantages exercise has on our mental health.

As part of her role as Squirrels champion for mental health, Nicky Marlow is doing a parkwalk on the last Saturday of every month followed by a coffee & cake meet up after.

This month's will be held this Saturday (24th February) at Abbey Park. Nicky is encouraging everyone at Squirrels, injured or as part of a training run to take part whether this be to run, Jeff, support, volunteer or walk with Nicky & Dawn. Getting up and out and being with people can brighten up a whole day and coffee & cake just makes it taste all the sweeter.

Food banks

https://runr.co.uk/pages/foodbankrun

February is a key time of the year where families are hardest hit. Christmas has come and gone, a time where families feel the pressure to put food on the table and spend money on their children, plus there is a pause on some household bills.

Then February arrives and suddenly the bills arrive at a time when cash is even more hard to come by. This is why the month of February is such an important time of the year and why we're focusing on supporting Food Bank Runs on any day of the month.

The number of people using food banks has now reached 2.1 million in the UK, up from just 1.6 million five years ago.

This is why, for the second year, Squirrels is joining in with the Runr Foodbank run on Monday 12th February to donate to Lutterworth & Villages foodbank. See 'other news' for more information.

So apparently today is National Puzzle Day, so here are three puzzles to get your brain working. Two easy and one a bit harder!

1. David's father has three sons: Snap, Crackle, and _____

2. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?

3. What 8 letter word can have a letter taken away and it still makes a word. Take another letter away and it still makes a word. Keep on doing that until you have one letter left. What is the word?

What an amazing achievement for 100 year old New Zealander Colin Thorne, who not only completed his 175th parkrun but is the first centenarian ever to complete a parkrun. I hope I'm as active when I'm 100! A interesting fact about the course that he ran in Whangerei, it is the only parkrun with a swing bridge on the course. If it opens during the parkrun, everyone has to wait until it is closed. I can just imagine a line of frustrated runners desperate to get going again

Happy New Year! I hope you all had the happiest of time over the festive season. I loved reading all of your goals from last year and what you are hoping to achieve for next year. Although there were some incredible goals achieved in 2023 and some great challenges ahead for many of you this year, I also liked those of you who told us you didn't achieve your goals last year or that your goal this is to maybe just to keep running. This shows we are all different, we are all human and that our goals should be ourselves. Every single one of you is an inspiration to others! I am hoping to collate all the 2024 goals to remind you at the end of the year

Please remember to complete the end of year survey. It will be open until the end of January and we would like to get feedback from as many of you as possible about anything related to the club (even Nutty News!) We will respond to all feedback in February.

Membership 2024

Thank you to those who have completed your membership form for this year and paid your fees. If you have not done so yet, please could you do this as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please speak to Sarah Leach

Christmas presents

There are still some of you that need to collect your present so please speak to Kate Keeling to arrange collection

Communications

Please try and make a point of reading Nutty News each week as it often contains a lot of information and we don't want to clog up your feed with lots of individual posts and things can easily get missed then. It is published on Monday's at 7am (Usually ). If it helps, I can tag @everyone each week but I don't want to over use this feature. Let me know your thoughts or again, complete the survey. It would also be helpful to another another member of our Comms Team now that Paula has stepped back for a while.
